Jonathan Clark has built up a reputation as one of London’s leading dealers in Modern British Art and the gallery has had a formative influence on this area of the market for over two decades. We are therefore able to offer valuable levels of expertise and experience to our clients, as well as a first-class range of services.
We work closely with a wide range of private collectors, as well as museums, institutions and corporations, advising on the purchase of works of art and the forming of collections.
The gallery also regularly acquires works from private and institutional sellers and we are happy to hear from both private individuals and curators perhaps looking to re-organise their collections.
We are also pleased to provide written valuations for works of art, for the purpose of probate or insurance.
The gallery has an expertise in the handling of artists estates that is unparalleled by any other dealer in the Modern British field.
We currently represent the estates of some of the most significant British artists of the 20th century, including Ivon Hitchens, Roger Hilton, Kenneth Armitage, Eduardo Paolozzi, Ceri Richards, Bryan Wynter and Adrian Heath, but we are always looking to add artists of similar standing to this list.
The gallery is able to offer specialist advice to artists’ families on estate planning and what we see as essential strategies for the selling of work from their holdings. This advice ranges from legal and tax matters, through managing conservation and storage, to planning programmes of exhibitions and publications. These strategies are tailor-made for each artist and we are always ready to discuss with artists’ families the specific ways they might benefit.
The gallery has an influential approach to the framing of Modern British art, with Jonathan being the first dealer in London to put 20th century British paintings in 16th and 17th century Italian frames – a practice that is now widespread.
As well as framing the gallery’s own works, we are also able to advise on the framing of works acquired elsewhere, bringing into play our knowledge of the way an artist’s works were historically presented, as well as our own contemporary creative take on what could look good.
The gallery also provides assistance with hanging paintings and installing sculpture, ensuring the work is done properly, from a technical point of view, as well as offering advice on suggested schemes and layouts.
We undertake research on works of art from private and corporate collections. The gallery has extensive resources for academic research, combined with a much-respected working knowledge of 20th century British art and the art market. Beyond amassing academic information on a particular piece, such research can often help determine its importance in the wider history and thus its value.
We are also able to offer a comprehensive conservation and restoration service, working in tandem with leading specialists and conservation studios, and involving the most up-to-date technological materials and techniques. Whether it is a simple clean that’s needed, or a major programme of restoration, we feel that the costs of caring for your works of art in this way are not exorbitant, and are usually negligible in comparison to the value of the work itself. |
